Recent meetings & tours

WOW - the June meeting was action packed!  Here is a brief overview of the evening.

Dinner was catered in by Gateway Market with plenty of food for all.  There was a short business meeting which included voting on a few bylaw changes, voting on Board of Directors roles, &  the following awards.  Thank you all for your time, talents & support of APICS.

Educator of the Year - Karen Schiebout

Volunteers of the Year - Janet Schulte & Kent Guthrie

Partner company of the Year - Accumold

Follwing was a speech by Gale Mote who spoke to us on Building Strong Teams: It's a Matter of Trust.  We learned the characteristics of trust in a team, and taking the time to really know the members of a team so that it can be cohesive.  We learned to stay "above the bar" by trying to control what we can and not blaming / complaining.  Thanks Gale for a great message!

Board Message

APICS, in its Education and Certification courses, consistently stress the need for Management to provide direction, a balanced scorecard with measurable objectives and communication.  The Chapter Benchmarking and Review (C-BAR) process is the basic tool to accomplish much of this direction.

C-BAR is an annual self-assessment of each chapter in the API CS world-wide network.  It has 10 basic sections covering Marketing, Membership, Finance, Management, Student Chapter relations, and Education.  By the nature and number of questions the Society is communicating to the chapter what they think is important to running a strong and viable chapter.

Throughout the year and especially a fiscal year-end in June the Board of Directors reviews and completes the information required.  The information comes from records kept by the various officers.  Examples include:

  •         Growth of membership
  •         Number of PDMs and education courses held
  •         Percentage of certified members
  •         Existence of a marketing plan
  •         Advertising in media outlets
  •         Publication of research and other articles on logistics and the supply chain

Overall 83 questions are answered forcing the Board to look deeply into all aspects of Chapter Management. In addition certain documents have to be submitted to prove that the chapter is complying with the requirements.   Each section is scored separately against a potential “perfect” score.  This provides both the Society, but more importantly, the chapter with insights into its strengths and weakness.  The Board uses this as a type of SWOT Analysis.  Chapters are awarded a Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze status depending on the score.  Five years of Gold status will earn you the Platinum status.  We go ours last year for the first time.

C-Bar along with your evaluation of meetings provides the board with the information it needs to improve the chapter and bring more value to your membership investment.  You can tell how we are doing from our scores and if you move locations you can use it assess the chapter in your new area.  You will be able to access a copy of the Central Iowa C-BAR from the website when it becomes available in July.
